I’m passionately in love with stories–the stories that connect us across culture, race, and age. I think the right story, at the right time, can change a child’s life. I’m most interested in bringing forward stories that are being forgotten or misremembered. I write picture books, contemporary middle grade fiction, and YA fiction. My debut picture book, LET THE CHILDREN MARCH, was published by Clarion Books in January 2018, with stunning art from Frank Morrison. My next book, STANDING ON HER SHOULDERS, from Orchard Press (Scholastic), released in February 2021, with the amazing Laura Freeman illustrating. TEACHING FOR CHANGE: HOW SEPTIMA CLARK LED THE CIVIL RIGHTS MOVEMENT TO VOTING JUSTICE, by Yvonne Clark-Rhines and myself, with Abigail Albano-Payton illustrating, comes out January 27, 2026. I’m also a Unitarian Universalist minister, actor, former children’s librarian, and voice-over artist, and I live in a yurt in the country with my wife, too many cats, and just the right amount of daughters.
I am currently represented by a fantastic agent, Sarah Stephens at Red Fox Literary.

Dear Monica,
I am a 1st and 2nd grade teacher who recently did a unit on banned books. Thank you for creating literature that resonates with young readers and sparks meaningful conversations. One of my students wrote you a letter. (Below)
Dear Monica,
Let the Children March is a really good book. In fact, one of my favorites. It is an important story and should not be banned! Keep writing!
